Celebrations Across India, Especially in Mathura and Vrindavan

Ten days before, in Mathura (Krishna's city of birth) and Vrindavan- the holy cities are initiated into the festival celebrations with Rasleelas, Bhajans, Kirtans, and Pravachans. The crowning jewel in the festival is the midnight Abhishek, a ritual in which Krishna idols are bathed with milk, yogurt, honey, ghee, and water marking his birthday.

One peculiar tradition is the Chappan Bhog—a feast of 56 dishes that is offered as prasad to devotees. Another major event during the festival is Dahi Handi, which personifies Krishna's mischievous habit of stealing butter. Teams of young men make a human pyramid to break an earthen pot suspended from a height and filled with curd.

Krishna Janmashtami 2025 Puja Vidhi

Devotees prepare for the festival with meticulous rituals and offerings. Here is a step-by-step Puja Vidhi to perform at home:

1. Morning Bath and Fresh Attire: Start the day by bathing and wearing clean clothes.
2. Night Preparations: Decorate Krishna's palna (cradle), and clean the shrine with Gangajal (holy water).
3. Dhyana: Meditate to focus before starting the puja.
4. Placing the Krishna Idol: Place Lord Krishna’s idol in the cradle or on a wooden platform (chowki).
5. Padya: Offer water to Krishna’s feet.
6. Arghya and Achaman: Offer water and then perform achaman by drinking it.
7. Snana Ceremony: Bathe the idol with Panchamrit (a mix of milk, curd, honey, ghee, and Gangajal).
8. Shringaar: Adorn the idol with new clothes, jewelry, a mor pankh (peacock feather), and a flute.
9. Offer Flowers and Tulsi: Present flowers and Tulsi leaves to Krishna.
10. Makhan and Mishree Bhog: Offer butter and mishree (sugar crystals) as the bhog (sacred food).
11. Aarti: Sing the Kunj Bihari Aarti to honor the Lord.
12. Final Prayer: Conclude the puja by praying for your family’s safety and well-being.
