Cassius was, at one time, considered the world's largest captive saltwater crocodile, standing at 5,000 pounds. This creature, recognized by Guinness World Records for its enormity, served as a notable presence at Marineland Crocodile Park in Green Island, Queensland, Australia, making a visit there all the more worthwhile for most visitors because of its enormity and storied life.

Cassius Record-Breaking Status

Cassius earned his Guinness World Records title in 2011, labeling him the biggest crocodile in captivity back then. However, he lost the title in 2012 to Lolong, a 6.17-meter (20 feet 3 inches) long caught in the Philippines. When Lolong died in February 2013, Cassius regained his title and was a record holder until his death in November 2024.


Cassius Life and Capture

Said Dr. Webb, reptile expert, Cassius, the world's most famous saltwater crocodile, caught between 30 and 80 years of age in Finniss River, Northern Territory in 1984, because of its aggressive nature had reached about 120 by 2023.

Captured because of his attacks on boats repeatedly, three years later Cassius was relocated by the crocodile hunter George Craig to Green Island, where he became a key attraction at Marineland Melanesia. When Cassius first arrived, he measured 5.30 meters (17 feet 5 inches) and grew over time to his recorded length.


Cassius Legacy

Cassius died on November 2, 2024. He left a great legacy as one of the world's most famous crocodiles. With his incredible age and size, he became an unforgettable inhabitant of Marineland Crocodile Park, and his story remains an incredible part of crocodile conservation history.
