Han Kan was Born in 1970 in Gwangju, She began publishing in 1993. Over the years, she has become an international figure in literature, with great attention to her explorations of trauma, suffering, and human conditions. When The Vegetarian emerged in 2007, this catapulted her internationally into feature status, while Human Acts did the same for her role in addressing problematic past contexts in South Korea.

Han Kang Wins 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature

The South Korean author Han Kang has been awarded this year Nobel Prize in Literature for her intoxicating, poetic prose that, while running with the effusions of history, tracks the fragility of human existence. This is a historic moment for me, Kang said in an interview. She is the first South Korean to receive the esteemed prize. Mats Malm, secretary to the Swedish Academy Nobel Committee, announced the prize on October 10, 2024, in a ceremony held in Stockholm.

The Vegetarian focuses on a woman’s choice, although deemed radical and unreasonable by society including her family which causes trouble at home when she stops eating meat. It was the frst book written in Korean that won the International Booker Prize in 2016 making her well – known in the whole world.

As for Human Acts, one of the most popular with Australian readers, Han Kang addresses the events impeccably because 1980 is a pivotal point in the history of South Korea and the military government destroyed pro-democracy demonstrations. This psychotherapy novel has been appreciated for its polyphonic narrative and depiction of social trauma.
