Kristofferson was born to Mary Ann and Lars Henry Kristofferson, a U.S. Army Air Corps officer who later became a U.S. Air Force major general. Kristofferson paternal grandfather was an officer in the Swedish Army. Growing up, his father encouraged him to pursue a military career, but Kristofferson chose a different path.

He graduated from Pomona College with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree and later studied at Merton College, Oxford, on a Rhodes Scholarship, where he obtained a BPhil degree.
