History and Significance

Maharishi Valmiki was born as Ratnakar, a dacoit who, after meeting with Narada Muni, became a sage. Narada asked the thief Ratnakar to chant 'Rama'. But initially Ratnakar could not speak out the word. So Narada requested him to chant 'Mara', which is 'Rama' spelt backwards. Over a period of years, Ratnakar's chant took the shape of 'Rama'. Devotion and knowledge accompanied him in his steps, and it was due to the grace of Lord Brahma that he was named as Valmiki.

The life story of Valmiki was a transformation and redemption; he became the sage who wrote the Ramayana, recording the life and adventures of Lord Rama. His hermitage became the shelter of Sita when she was in exile, and he also played an important role in the upbringing of Luv and Kush, twin sons of Lord Rama and Sita.
